Lets go to the Movies!!!!

The Fundy Paddlers Club is proud to be hosting an event in Honour of Bill Miller. Details are here

The Waterwalker Film Festival is a tribute to the late Bill Mason, the great conservationist, canoeist and filmmaker. Mason once stated, "The medium of film is for me a means of expressing my love and enjoyment of the natural world, and of sharing my concern for what's happening to it with anybody who looks and listens."

Mason's idea of success was to be able to communicate through his films, books and paintings the intense feelings he had for his surroundings, and to somehow imbue others into sharing and adopting these thoughts and concerns.

Passionate in his beliefs, always speaking from the heart, his films inspired many people to rededicate themselves to the enjoyment and conservation of Canada's wilderness and waterways.

ww_canoe_imageThrough this celebration of film, the Waterwalker Film Festival invites you to become a part of Mason's on-going legacy; submit a film, host a tour date, become a festival sponsor, or simply come and enjoy the wide variety of films submitted by amateur and professional filmmakers from around the world.
By taking part in the Festival, it is our hope that you will be encouraged to become more involved with the protection and conservation of our unique Canadian wilderness and waterways.

Spring Message

March 20, 2011

Spring is here and canoes and kayaks are popping out of the snow banks quicker than  the crocuses. Fundy Paddlers have again set out a full season of training and trips for all levels of paddlers.

The training began March 14 at the club monthly meeting with Peter Foss’s presentation on camp stoves. Training continues March 25,26 with Vaughn Dunfield’s Paddlemaking Workshop. There are also dates (April 12 and May 10) set for in pool training at SJHS.

Other upcoming events will be finalized shortly with a presentation (April 3) by Scott Cunningham on sea kayaking in Nova Scotia. A major club fundraiser, the Water Walker Film Festival, is slated for April 30. Keep an eye out for more details.

The paddling season starts with an intermediate trip (April 9) on the Nerepis River. Check out the 2011 trip schedule.

The last two club meeting have seen changes in the executive with the addition of Carolyn Moore ( Registrar), Chris Burpee (Treasurer), Evan Young (Vice President) and Eric McCumber (President). Thanks go out to these folks for coming forward to help guide our group.

Many thanks go deservedly to the executive members who have just finished serving in positions. Bertha Sheppard (Registrar) had the calm and patience to handle all our membership paperwork so adeptly, and take care that everyone was in the loop. Kevin Hughes (Treasurer) stepped in to keep track of our books and to put us on the path to apply for future funding. Maurice Pigeon (President) has been the leader of the club since its inception. Through Maurice’s careful guidance the club has grown from about 10 people at a chilly winter meeting in 2008 to a membership of approximately 75 paddlers. During his three years of service the club has carried out several outreach events, a multitude of training opportunities and of course had people get out on the waters of New Brunswick. He would be the first to say it was a group effort, and rightly so, but good leadership is needed to keep things on track. Thanks again to all three.

The Hammond River Angling Association (HRAA) has been a great supporter of our club, providing us with a free meeting space and allowing us to use their facilities at outreach events. They are currently having their major fund raiser (2011 Annual Angler’s Draw) and we have been asked to sell some tickets. Please show your appreciation by buying or selling tickets. Cheryl McCumons, Kevin Suttie, Laura Mazerolle, Carolyn Moore, Nancy Clifford and Eric McCumber all have tickets for sale. Go to the HRAA web site for info on prizes for the April 23 draw.

Due to scheduling conflicts our monthly meetings will now be held on the third Monday of the month at HRAA. As usual notices will be emailed before the meetings.

Reminder that memberships are now due for 2011. $15.00 for single $20.00 for family. All members must sign a new waiver for this year.

January 2011

Hello and Welcome to the New Year. Just because there is snow on the ground and Ice on the water, that doesn't mean you can simply hibernate.

A lot of things good and not so good have happened over the year of 2010; We lost one of our original FPC Memebers, Al McDougall.

A number of us knew him well and will certainly miss his quiet assuredness.
Michel Arseneau has put together a slideshow in memory of Al.

Take a moment, visit the links below and remeber and smile as you remember the outings and gatherings that you shared with this great friend of the Fundy Paddlers Club.

View The slide shows by clicking the links below

Hello paddlers out there. Its getting to that dreaded time of year where we put away the canoes and kayaks.. I know we all hate to do so. But There are still some brave souls among us. Evan Young may have a paddle or two up his sleeve yet. Watch for email updates as to when and where this will happen.

Our club does not go into hibernation for the winter. Rather we are able to focus on training and info sharing and of course theres the Christmas Party that will be along shortly.

If you haven't already signed up for an FPC membership, please do so and email our Communications Officer and ask to be added to our email list. That way you'll know exactly whats on the move with the Fundy paddlers Club.

Business Meeting minutes have been posted for October and November.

Next meeting is at Lily's Cafe (Lily Lake Pavillion Cafe) Dec 13th 7pm.
See you there.

April 2 2010

Heres an update on the paddle for saturday morning:
Stephen Jarvis is actually the trip leader for the event. See below.

Staging area will be 10:00 AM April 3rd at the old Baptist Church before the
Saddle back road, on turn, next to bridge (Hammond Ville), you cannot miss it.
HYW 820 from Saint John. The pull out area will be the Barnesville Cement Bridge.
To that point the trip would be approx. 3 hours. The upper portion starts narrow
and will widen as you move down river. There are a number of sharp bents and at
this time of year, you could find dead falls along the banks. The last section is wide
and can be rough on a canoe (the devils back) if the water levels are low. Ensure your
group is equipped in case of a swim (personal attire and equipment) as I went for a swim l
ast April (dead fall). We could pull out at the Smith town bridge, if you wanted to add approx.
2 more hours to the trip.  I will bring my First Aid Kit.

The Map will give you an idea on how to get there and also a look at the river.

Here is a Google Maps link with you.

Stephen Jarvis

Gary was full of life, energetic and he easily made friends wherever he was with his pleasing personality. Gary loved to share his passion with the outdoor.
